“How I Use AI as a Tutor Without Letting It Think for Me”
AI can explain almost anything in a matter of seconds. That sounds useful, but it can also be risky. If you use AI incorrectly, you stop thinking and start copying. If you use it the right way, AI becomes a tutor that helps you learn without replacing your effort.
My first move? I set a clear learning goal. For example: “I want to understand first-order differential equations and tackle problems solo.” If I skip this step, AI scatters info everywhere. With a goal, it stays sharp and on track.
Before asking AI for help, I always do a pre-test. I try to solve a problem or explain the topic from memory. Even if I get it wrong, this step is still important. Educational research indicates that attempting to recall information before studying can help improve long-term learning. Struggling a little can actually prepare your brain to learn better.
When I use AI, I don’t ask for full answers. I ask for hints, step-by-step guidance, or common mistakes. Research on AI tutors shows that students learn more when they attempt problems first and then receive feedback, instead of seeing complete solutions immediately. So I solved the problem myself, pasted my work, and asked AI to point out errors and explain what went wrong.
Practice is where AI shines. I have it whip up practice questions just for me and check my work. Instant feedback lets me spot mistakes and patterns fast. Studies on AI in education agree: Personalized drills and on-the-spot feedback are where AI really earns its stripes.
The final step is a teach-back. I explain the topic in my own words and ask AI to check if my explanation is clear and correct. Teaching forces a better understanding. If I can’t explain something simply, I know I don’t fully understand it yet.
Research on generative AI is clear: AI works best when students stay in control. If you let AI think for you, learning becomes shallow. If you use it to guide and challenge you, AI becomes a powerful tutor.
AI doesn’t make you smarter. How you use it does.
Cant we just use a proper ai for this kind of stuff??
ReplyDeleteIt says that for all Ai not any particular one like chat gpt or anything else.
